What does this indicator measure?
Property crimes are offenses involving other people’s personal possessions. Property crimes are separated into four different categories by the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI). The categories are burglary, larceny, motor vehicle theft and arson. Property crimes affect the real and perceived safety of a community.
Between 2000 and 2008, the rate of property crimes per 10,000 people stayed relatively consistent in the United States, Onondaga County and the city of Syracuse. Property crimes are approximately twice as frequent as violent crimes both nationally and locally.
